3.  When you were a child, what did your mom or caregiver give you to eat or drink when you were sick? And how do you feel about the choice now?  June gave me 7-UP and Campbell’s Tomato Soup with saltine crackers. Probably wouldn’t be my first choice (for myself or my child) at this point in life.   1. I don’t remember any specific food or drink, except maybe vernors ginger ale for a see throat. I think like ginger for a sore throat, I would usually buy reeds brand now

  2. My mom always gave me Sprite, Sprite and more Sprite. “It will soothe your tummy.” I think the wisdom came from the idea of the a ginger ale type soda being made with REAL ginger, but got lost along the way and somehow Sprite had magical powers.

  3. A sweet, hot cup of tea was always the go to when I was little and didn’t feel well, followed by toast. I’m still a fan of that hot cup of tea!

  4. I don’t really remember what my mom gave me, but I do remember what was taken away – cow’s milk. Then the goal was always to get me well (usually ear and/or sinus infection) as quickly as possible so I could get back to my three servings of cow’s milk per day. I found out in my mid 20s, it was the cow’s milk that was making me sick! So I eliminated it from my diet and my daughter doesn’t get it either. I haven’t had an ear/sinus/upper respiratory infection since, and my daughter’s only had one ear infection in her 8 years, compared to multiple for me per year into adulthood.

  5. My grandmother swore by 7-UP! And then bed. My mom gave us toast, and then to bed. I’m fortunate that my family knew the importance of rest. Of course, as a kid, once I knew I was going back to bed and not school, suddenly I felt better! Mom knew better, fortunately for me, and I stayed in bed. Toast always seemed to do the trick; but, hot tea and chicken noodle soup–always Campbell’s– were great, too. That is my maiden name, too. Go figure!
    Today, I include hot tea and homemade chicken bone broth–the best! Oh yes…and rest! (I hope I’m a subscriber; couldn’t see where to put my e-mail at the top of the whole web site.)

  6. My parents were definitely 7-UP givers! While I don’t do this for myself anymore, nor would I recommend it, there’s definitely nostalgia, and it felt therapeutic at the time! I had a baby-sitter who was like a grandma, and she was a pusher of prune juice and Pedialyte!

  7. Old fashioned chicken noodle soup was what my Mom always fed us when we were sick. I make homemade bone broth now so I guess I’m sort of following in her footsteps.

  8. I was a sick child and I can remember the agony it caused my mom.
    She turned to big hugs, Ginger Ale, coloring books…for my throat
    it was honey with lemon and a bed time story.
    My Italian grandmother made a broth that will heal ANYONE.
    She would get a fresh chicken that she had raised, a whole potato, a tomato that
    she grew, celery, carrots, salt, onion…none of it cut up but placed in the pot whole with water….simmer for hours. I still make this stock 70 years later.

  9. It must have been the thing back then. 7-up, Campbell’s tomato soup, saltines, and milk toast. My mother was a nurse. No thank you to any of those now.

  10. My mom would give us warm liquid Jello, usually cherry. Also Campbell’s chicken noodle and dry white toast.

  11. When we were sick it was Mrs. Grass’ chicken soup from a box, saltines and jello. Yuck. Today I would want chicken bone broth with garlic and ginger.

  12. Ginger-ale, and the BRAT diet…..banana, rice, apple sauce, and toast.
    Now it’s ginger tea and gluten free toast.

  13. My mom would give us Cola Syrup from the pharmacy to tame a troubled tummy. I remember her giving some to me when I had the flu, my senior year of high school. 🙂

  14. 7up, campbell’s chicken noodle soup and saltines…or top ramen. Nowadays I keep loose leaf tea fixings onhand to make for me or kids per ailment, plus essential oils. I love homemade chicken soup too. Although, if really down and out, we all still love top ramen and gatorade – yikes!

  15. My caregiver/neighbor/adopted grandmother, gave us peanut butter and bacon sandwiches on wheat toast, (the fancy small Pepperidge Farm’s stuff!) Oh they were delicious! Probably not “Healthy” get-well food to say the least! I remember she served them on fancy crystal plates too.

  16. My mom always made hot lemonade with honey and a dash of ginger. If I had a cough, she’d put in a shot of whiskey. I still make it. Gave to my kids too, minus the whiskey and used fresh ginger.

  17. My mom always gave me ginger ale to drink when I was sick, and she made me baked potatoes (with lots of butter). The ginger ale helped sore throats and tummy problems. The baked potatoes were probably not the easiest food to digest, but they are still comforting to me when I’m under the weather. The only chicken soup I remember was Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup. Probably not as nourishing as the 24-hour bone broth I make for my family members today when they have a cold or bronchial congestion

  18. Campbell’s chicken noodle soup or homemade soup. If we had a really bad cold it was honey, lemon, and a bit of whiskey.

  19. My mom gave us ginger ale for stomach ailments and mild foods such as chicken soup from a can and toast or a thin rice gruel. I gave my daughter ginger ale but made the chicken soup myself using homemade stock.

  20. My mom’s go-to get well soon meal was always her homemade chicken noodle soup. It always made me feel a lot better.

  21. Our house was Ginger Ale, saltine crackers and Jello. But never the red Jello, always green in case you were throwing up blood. Yuck!
