  1. I’m still a big fan of gargling with salt water at the first sign of a sore throat. My mom always had me do that as a kid, and I feel like it really works!

    1. I’m a big fan of homemade fresh ginger and lemon tea that simmers on the stovetop for at least an hour…also I make a Thai coconut chicken soup with lots of garlic and more ginger, plus greens to support our immune systems.

  2. The strong ginger tea is a great idea. I like to have homemade chicken soup with veggies instead of noodles/rice. If there’s no soup in the freezer, I’ll use homemade bone broth with a generous spoonful of barley miso.

  3. I read the first comments about the teas and gargles. Always good. I go to the other end and put my feet in a hot ginger soak to pull out the bugs. This would be so nurturing to be sipping the hot herbal teas at the same time…music and wearing wool. The bugs really don’t have a chance:)

  4. Our favorite remedy is the old standby chicken soup. The more garlic and onions the better as well as lemon in the soup. When the patient’s appetite returns we will make egg drop soup. Yum!

  5. Cramps can quickly be resolved if you swallow a small amount of cream of tartar. About 1/4 teaspoon on the tongue. Careful not to inhale the powder.

  6. Honey and lemon with hot water at the start of a cold. I’m also a firm believer in a cup of chicken broth each day to help boost my immune system.

  7. I’m not sure if you would consider this an ‘ailment’ but a sure fire way to get veggies in my kids is through a green smoothie with fruits/veggies, chia seeds and hemp hearts. My smoothie helps prevent ailments 🙂 I could use this book in my GI pediatric clinic and rent it out to my patients.

  8. Hot water with lemon to alkalize first thing in the morning, then I sprinkle a half teaspoon of cinnamon on my morning oatmeal for blood sugar balance.

  9. Drinking ginger lemon water as I type! My other “chase away a cold” remedy is mashed up garlic, parsley and olive oil on toast.

  10. Chamomile tea for relaxation and stress relief. Honey and lemon juice for sore throat. Lukewarm olive oil with garlic steeped in it for an ear ache. Remove all garlic and drop gently into aching ear.

  11. Also, I get good results from apple cider vinegar for digestion. But I prefer this remedy in summer, rather than cold months.

  12. Atlantic Grey Salt for all sorts of things! Drink small amount in water for electrolyte hydration, gargle, nasal rinse, mouth wash, face scrub.

  13. As a preventative we drink warm water eveyday with fresh squeezed lemon, a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, a spoonful of local honey, and a dash of cayenne. We also make a strong brew of fresh ginger tea when feel like somethings coming on. Also I just got turned onto Golden Milk, which I think will be great for to help with my inflammation!

  14. I use Chamomile tea bags and tea, along with raw honey, to treat simple eye ailments. Light conjunctivitis or eye allergies are taken care of, with a warm compress of the tea!

  15. Ginger-lemon tea for a runny nose, sore throat.
    And if I have an attack of nighttime leg cramps I down a teaspoon of prepared yellow mustard and a glass of water. Not super tasty but it works!

  16. For my issues with throat phlegm, I make a brew of ginger, cayenne, lemon, agave (which is vegan; original recipe calls for honey), and hot water. Have to sip it VERY diluted and in VERY small doses! And never on an empty stomach. But it does help.

  17. While my typical go to for any ailment is always soup, homemade soup, when someone gets a cough around here we get out a big bunch of grapes and just munch, munch, munch. A handful before bedtime helps insure a good night’s sleep that won’t be disturbed by coughs.

  18. Strong ginger tea with honey & lemon whenever I feel a cold coming on& all through it. It really hits the spot when I’m sick. I also love a bowl of homemade chicken soup and I keep a base (without noodles or rice) in the freezer to heat up when I’m the one that is sick. 🙂

  19. For any headache I increase consumption of lemon water and eat fruit. Sometimes the miracle remedy is peaches from a can (I know, crazy!) but it works like a charm. Learned this from the master herself, Annemarie Colbin. She didn’t recommend the canned peaches, I discovered that one day when there was no fresh fruit available!

  20. 1-Gargle with sea salt & warm water; 2-drink a small glass of 1 T. apple cider vinegar and warm water, and then; 3-cozy up in a warm afghan to watch an old black and white movie with a cup of hot Ginger & Turmeric tea!

  21. We reach straight for the Bragg’s vinegar and mix it with honey and hot water. My daughter actually LOVES vinegar….she says it tastes like Easter eggs! Thanks for the great offer today.

    2. Tea made from ginger, lemon juice, a little honey, a little cayenne pepper. This stuff really works.

  23. Yes hot tea made from fresh ginger root and elderberry elixir that I make with honey, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, ginger and elderberries. Hot epsom salt baths or sauna too.

  24. I love a strong orange pekoe tea with lemon, honey and hefty shake of cayenne pepper for sore throat and colds. Aloe juice for burns and bites. Also, a paste of baking soda and water for fresh insect bites and stings, takes the itch and burn away. Hot salt water rinse and gargle for any sores in the mouth, including sore throat. Sliced cucumbers can be applied to reduce swollen eyes from lack of sleep.

  25. For mild cold symptoms, I’m a fan of hot toddies made with lemon/ginger tea, honey, & a good whiskey (not the cheap stuff!). For a sore throat, I like to use a gargle made from a sage infusion and a touch of honey. This isn’t for drinking as sage can cause an upset stomach if too much is swallowed.

  26. I make a ginger tincture that I put into warm water and drink several times a day in addition to elderberry syrup!

  27. I avoid gluten which helps avoid inflammation and I add generous amounts turmeric, garlic, and cinnamon to soups and stews and even some baked goods!

  28. For a cough: Honey and lemon juice stirred together in a teacup and eaten (?) with a spoon. Takes me back to my childhood.

  29. I make fermented foods regularly but probably use sauerkraut the most. I use it as a digestive aid since it’s filled with probiotics and enzymes. If I ate a meal that’s a little too heavy I snack on a quarter cup of sauerkraut. Tummy is soothed in about 20 minutes.

  30. I make Khichari, which is an Indian lentil and rice dal dish. It’s easy to eat when feeling unwell or recovering from illness and highly nutritious when made with coconut oil, turmeric, black pepper, ginger, garlic and a fragrant array of other spices. Even if you’re just feeling in need of a little comfort, this dish will soothe your weary soul 🙂

  31. I make sure there’s always a jar or two of homemade chicken bone broth in the freezer at all times. That way, if a bug hits, I’ve got healing broth at the ready! I heat it and sip it throughout the day to boost my immune system, ward off the chills, and give me a big boost of nutrients.

  32. Coincidently, I am eating my go-to healing soup right now, trying to fend off a cold. Onion, garlic, ginger, shiitakes, and carrots. Which I have tweaked over time from a recipe in Feeding the Whole Family 🙂

  33. For me there is nothing better than chamomile tea to settle the stomach and Echinacea tea to fight an coming cold. To strengthen my overall well-being and constitution I prepare a bowl of Miso soup.

  34. I make tea with a 1/2 tsp of each: xrays ginger, raw honey, apple chide vinegar, touch of cayenne and cinnamon. I also take oregano oil capsules, spray zinc, spray medicinal mushrooms, and make chicken soup with crushed garlic. I know, it’s a lot! 🙂

  35. There’s nothing like jewel weed for insect bites, poison ivy, or other inflammation of the skin! I grow it in my garden to keep it handy. It’s pretty miraculous. Plus, the seed pods are fun because they’re spring-loaded!

  36. Drinking lots of bone broth and holding my head over a steaming pot of oregano and thyme always work for me! I’ll use the essential oils or fresh herb depending on what I have on hand!

  37. I love to make homemade elderberry syrup on hand, but my go to at any sign of illness is raw garlic! It keeps the germs away and sometimes those you like and love, unfortunately. A drop or two of peppermint or lemon essential oil in a glass of water seems to help cut the odor however.

  38. I curl up around a mug of Throat Coat tea by Traditional Medicinals. And then, if it gets hungry out and I’m feeling too crappy to make/eat real food and because every spoonful is brimming with hot comforting salty slimy noo-noos, I’ll slurp down a whole box of Mrs. Grass’s Chicken Noodle Soup.

  39. I gargle with warm salt water, drink cups of hot ginger tea or different varieties of herbal tea & feed myself with fresh, nutrient dense foods.

  40. Enjoy some miso soup for a healthy gut. Mixing the fermented bean paste in with some hot water in which you have cooked scallion slices and mushrooms, maybe some chiffonade greens is my favorite.

  41. First sign of sore throat, hot lemon water with honey. For constipation or stuffiness, I absolutely love Traditional Medicinals roasted Dandelion Root tea. Gentle and very effective. Especially if I’m out of ACV.

  42. I slice raw garlic very thin and eat it on a slice of apple to make it more palatable. I usually eat 3 or 4 cloves when I’m feeling unwell. Also, Kombucha!

  43. I eat raw almonds every day to keep headaches away, Lemon Zinger tea (good old Celestial Seasonings) with lots of honey and a little whiskey for cold symptoms before bed.

  44. I drink apple cider vinegar diluted in water. Or fire cider. I recently made a batch from a Bastyr recipe (vinegar, honey, ginger, pepper, other good stuff).
